Enterprise SSO is often sold as a checkbox, but reliable SAML support involves identity mapping, certificate rotation, tenant discovery, account lifecycle, and recovery when an identity provider is misconfigured.
This guide explains the engineering decisions behind dependable SAML SSO for multi-tenant B2B software. It focuses on secure defaults and operational workflows rather than protocol terminology alone.
Establish trust per tenant
Store issuer, endpoints, certificates, audience, and attribute mapping as tenant-scoped configuration. Validate signatures, issuer, audience, destination, timestamps, and replay protections. Never select a tenant solely from an untrusted assertion field.
Define identity linking
Choose stable identifiers and rules for matching existing users. Email addresses can change and may be reassigned. Decide whether just-in-time provisioning is permitted, which roles may be assigned, and how conflicts between SSO and local accounts are resolved.
Support lifecycle and recovery
Plan certificate overlap, metadata updates, deactivation, domain changes, and identity-provider outages. Provide tested administrative recovery that does not bypass security casually. SCIM or another provisioning mechanism may be needed because SAML login alone does not guarantee timely removal.
Build an operable integration
Offer diagnostics that reveal validation stages without exposing assertions or secrets. Maintain audit logs and tenant-specific test procedures. Before launch, exercise expired certificates, clock skew, replay attempts, changed attributes, and locked-out administrators—not only the successful login path.
